December 2011 - Newsletter

  • Seasons Greetings, Merry Christmas, Happy holidays.

We say it every year, and it seems to be more true each time around... How quickly the year has flown!

We all seem to be busier and more rushed as each year passes, so it's all the more important to slow down for the holidays and spend some time and thought on what really matters. Family, friends. Loved ones.

No matter how you say it or how you spend it, please accept our very best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a great start to the New Year.

  • Thanks to our fantastic friends in the Western Region

We've been fortunate to have been welcomed in lots of places this year, some familiar, some new to us. To everyone in:
Bourke, Baradine, Brewarrina, Bathurst, Cowra, Coolah, Coonabarabran, Condobolin, Dubbo, Grenfell, Goolma,
    Lightning Ridge, Orange, Raglan,
Trundle, Sydney, right through to Wellington, Walgett, Wanaring and all stops in between, have a fantastic Christmas.

  • iKiLives - Wello and Coona. These are the schools that have been iKiSchools the longest and dare we say, are favourites. Watch Wellington and Coonabarabran in action!

  •  Christmas, Holidays and New year of course! We're taking a decent break and will be back in the office on the 23rd of January. If you want to do some iKi at home you can still log on to the Learn Online for free by clicking here
  •  We have some great ideas for next year - but we'll talk about them then!
  • Something I've noticed in my several years teaching is that when learning new things we tend to focus always on what we still can't do and therefore undervalue the distance we've come. Now is a good time to slow down and take stock, not of what we haven't yet achieved, but of what we have.

  • Thanks to all the great people I've been priviliged to work with in 2011. I'm looking forward to a very exciting 2012.
  • Nutritionist Erin with a Christmas Tip:

Christmas and the holidays are a time when it's very easy to overindulge in the sweet and fatty foods that are everywhere. It's really easy to overindulge and end up feeling  lousy. But there are some simple steps we can take to keep some balance. Try these tips:

  • Before every meal have a big drink of water.
  • Fill you plate with fresh food first;- lots of salads, fruit and vegies help fill us  up and keep us feeling great.
  • Never start or finish a meal with a sweet. Think about that last one. Start with savouries, salads fruits and finish with nuts, cheese, fruit. It works for me.
  • Enjoy good food.

  • Only 4 weeks till Chrissy. I hope everyone has achieved at least some of their goals for this year. Everyone I talk to has the same message; - It has been a tough year, busy and demanding.
So the agenda now is to get as many things finished as possible by Christmas and then take a well earned break. I know that when I think about all the things I want to get done, it can get a little panicky - till I remember a simple tip. Write a list. It's always surprising how it makes for calm. And it feels great to tick them off.

  • Baradine iKiLive. We've always said we come home from Baradine tired but happy - and that was certainly true a couple of weeks ago after two big days that culminated in an iKiLive Concert. Baradine Central School has a number of young people who are showing great leadership skills. Check out Brieanna Watson, Mikaiyla Currin, Erica Carlson and lots of others. See here for photos and vid.
  • Bourke PCYC. We have had a couple of trips to Bourke in recent weeks - to train the trainers at PCYC, and present to the DEC schools Principals Conference. The PCYC Workshop was small but high quality.

  • Jake Chatfield and partner Tareka Whaleboat have really got the PCYC on the move. We hope to spend a lot more time in Bourke next year. Check our gallery for photos coming soon!

  • Meet Joe Williams. Many of you will already know Joe. He moved to Dubbo about 12 months ago with his partner and is pursuing a number of interests including football, boxing and music, as well as moving towards a teaching career. Joe is currently working with Mission Australia and raising a young family. Joe is an inspiring young leader, and a great bloke. He recently auditioned for the new music show 'The Voice,' Click here for a sneak preview.

  • We missed Nutritionist Erin last month but she's back with a simple food Tip for morning tea or recess.

It’s so easy to choose packaged convenience foods like chips and snack bars for recess but there are much healthier choices for fueling your body at recess. Throw away the rubbish and keep it fresh with fruit, yoghurt, custard or veggie sticks. Try crackers or crisp-bread with cheese, dips or spread, or make your own crackers out of toasted pita bread. My top pick for packaged foods: try low fat muesli or fruit bars, packet sultanas, or individual packets of Rice Wheels, Potato Stix, Vita Weat grain snacks, Sakata or popcorn. Yum!

To see what Erin does every day, have a look at http://www.foodvitality.com.au/.

  • The New iKiYellow and Green DVDs. They’ve been in the making for a long time, we know - but it’s taken us longer than we thought (doesn’t it always?) to get the look, feel and content right, blah blah blah. But FINALLY they are here - and because it's Christmas we have some special deals in the iKiStore.

  • Don't forget the The Learn Online now includes Energiser Classes. These make it so much easier to learn all the moves in fun, bite size chunks - perfect for a morning wake up, a mid day pick-me-up or an evening wind down. Each class is around 12 minutes and makes it simple and fun to learn the moves and progress at you own pace.

  • Don't forget, we're now working on more content for the Learn Online. On that point have you checked out Emma's Song at the end of the Yellow Learn Online? We would love for you to share your favourite exercise routine, dance or martial arts move. Please have a think about it over the Christmas break.

We have quite a number of new songs that need to be choreographed as well....hint hint!
  • It's iKiLive season; iKiLive at Coonabarabran on Dec 1st and Wellington on December 6. Click here for more!

  • Wow, Christmas is just around the corner and we're all flat out getting as much done as possible before the silly season. One of the projects we are working on is creating new songs and activities for the Learn Online section.

The first of these is up. Meet Emma-Jane Trudjett, a fantastic young dancer and teacher form Dubbo , You can learn some great Hip Hop moves from Emma by clicking here! Please note, you will need to click the Introduction link at the extreme top-right of the Player and you'll see Emma's Song at the bottom of the list.
  • it's iKiLive season - we are back at Wellington Public for a few iKiBlasts in the lead up to the iKiLive on December 6. That will be a great day. iKiLives are also scheduled for Coonabarabran and Baradine (keep an eye on the Upcoming Events on the home page)

  • We are at the National Field Days in Orange on Thursday 20. We are a part of the Health Promotion exhibit. If you're there please come along and see us.

  • Life has it's ups and downs for all of us, that's just how it goes.

There are lots of things we can do that help us to cope; good diet, regular exercise, time out with friends and family, hobbies, maintaining loving relationships all help us get over the bumps and through the valleys of life. However, sometimes we just have to Suck It Up. Check out our video on this subject. By the way, if you didn't have a look at Emma, our first fantastic Online Guest Instructor on the Learn Online section, you'll meet her in this clip.
  • The New iKiYellow and Green DVDs. They’ve been in the making for a long time, as well – but it’s taken us longer than we thought (doesn’t it always?) to get the look, feel and content right.
They’ll be available in the iKiStore next month- so watch out for them.

  • The Learn Online now includes Energiser Classes. These make it so much easier to learn all the moves in easy, bite size chunks - perfect for a morning wake up or evening wind down. Each class is around 12 minutes and makes it easy and fun to learn the moves and progress at you own pace.
  • I am excited to see reports and evaluations being released that show how engagement and behaviours of students are greatly improved with the use of clear, consistent, and fair guidelines. I'm sure we all know this but it's great to see it in writing. We know also that publicly making Positive affirmations is very empowering. Check out some iKiCrew from Brewarrina.

  • Sydney University, in conjunction with the Dubbo School of Rural Health is conducting a landmark longitudinal study into adolescents and need subjects- young people in Years 5, 6 or 7 at school. It actually sounds like a lot of fun (seriously) and rewarding. It involves a total commitment of only ,a few hours per year over 3 years, but includes cool rewards such as movie tickets, phone charges and other stuff that the kids will love. If you would like to get involved, or would like more info go to www.archerstudy.org.au.

  • As I mentioned in the Latest news section, we're now working on more content for the Learn Online section and will have some more to announce in next months Newsletter. Meanwhile, if you have a great, simple exercise routine you would like to share, please let us know.

  • A tip from this month's guest writer, Encouraging Erin!

Your day is really not worth starting unless you've made sure you've had breakfast. My top tip for fuelling your day, is that you don't walk out of the house without at least a mouthful of food in your belly. If you're stuck for ideas, my favourite choices include cereal, toast, pancakes or crumpets, or even fruit, yoghurt or a glass of milk are good ideas.

To be the best you can be, make sure you've had breakfast!
  • Power Person Steve Hodder says very clearly something we believe in - That education is Power

New Stuff

Wow!  Can you believe May is over already, and with its close comes the long awaited launch of the brand new look iKiFit website.  We have been working against the clock to have the new design up and functioning, and now it's finally here.  Hooray! Check it out for yourself.  We still feature the same great content, like our very awesome Learn Online section, but the look and functionality is completely revamped.

Don't forget the new website will be member only at the start of July.  If you're already using the tools and resources, contact us now for your free membership.  This is a one time opportunity for you to be a part of all the cool stuff at iKiFit for free.  So get in touch with us and we will set up your account now.

Mitch brought a film crew to Dubbo during the month to shoot new stuff for the site and some final shots for the latest Gold and Green DVD.  We're releasing the DVD mid-June, with new songs and moves that you haven't seen before.  Jump online and pre-order yours now by clicking here.  You may have seen us in different locations around Dubbo doing some pretty hard core moves and drills.  We had a lot of fun, and the new website will feature an impressive trailer of these Blue and Red moves

Go online and start practicing the Gold and Green classes, and you'll be ready to take on the more difficult Blue and Red levels. These levels are martial arts and combat focused.  They are challenging, require a lot of energy, and extremely fun all at once.

We also filmed an updated iKiTip.  This will be online with the revamped website soon, and will keep you equipped with simple messages on the little things you can do to live an empowered life.

How much more can you fit into a month!  We just want to say a quick thank you to the very cool teachers at Brewarrina Central. We held an iKiTrainer Workshop in Bre just after Easter, and we were impressed by the enthusiasm and willingness from these guys.  We also spent productive and enjoyable days in both Baradine Central School and Coonabarabran.  The teachers and students there were positive and eager, and we are excited by their progress.

We also have a special mention for Wellington Public School for their ongoing support of iKiFit, and also to St John's Dubbo for all their help, especially with the recent filming.  Thanks guys, you're awesome!  We'll be featuring new video soon of staff and students from St John's, so be sure to keep checking online.  In the meantime, check out the very cool iKiLive online now.

And now moving forward just briefly, we have a fairly jam packed month ahead as well.  We'll be iKiBlasting Baradine, Walgett and Lightning Ridge during the month.  Check the calendar out for when and to register click here. We're hitting Cowra for an iKiTrainer Workshop on the 29 June, and then straight back to Dubbo for a Mission Australia iKiTrainer Workshop on the 30th.

Keep up to date with our online calendar for more iKiTrainer Workshops, and click here to register for one near you.

Until next month, stay Happy, Healthy and Strong and be sure to keep checking the website for changes and the calendar for a workshop or iKiBlast coming near you soon!

April 2011 - Newsletter

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

 Date: 27 April 2011

It doesn't really matter how you celebrate Easter, most of us end the long weekend with one thing in common - an overload of chocolate indulgence, feeling like that one tiny little egg in the bottom of the kids' easter basket might just be the end of you.
I know I did.  I had chocolate energy to burn, but felt that lying on the lounge all day, resting my overstuffed stomach might just be all I could manage.  The two don't really go hand-in-hand, I know, so I had to do something to get myself back into gear.  And here is the answer I have for all of you perhaps feeling the same way, and not quite sure how to motivate yourself to fire into work mode, let alone get through the day - a 10 minute iKiFit Energiser Class.
There's eight classes to choose from in the iKiFit Learn Online section of the website.  Each class has a warm up, a couple of songs to do a quick and revitalising workout to, and most have a stretch track as well.  After my chocolate overkill I sweated it out to Class Three.  Here, Pete takes you through your paces with The Reason, followed by Mitch and the energetic Best Shot.  It was awesome!  I highly recommend finding just 10 minutes in your day for an Energiser Class.  I felt invigorated, empowered, and was completely over Easter and all that chocolate by the end of it.
Jump on to the iKiFit website now,
www.ikift.com.au and go to the Learn Online section to start empowering your life with an Energiser Class.  And please feel free to send us an email with your feedback, ikicentral@ikifit.com.au

For most of us school and work start back today.  The holidays once again came and went in a heartbeat.  We trust that you were all able to take some much needed rest and spend some quality time with your family over the Easter break.

The holidays brought little reprieve for us here.  Tuesday 12 April we rocked it at the Dubbo Skate Park as a part of National Youth Week.
iKiFit joined Dubbo Youth Council, Mission Australia, Housing NSW and The Basement Art Studio to bring DJ in the Park.  It was an awesome day with cool music, skating, art and of course iKiFit.  We performed a few moves and were certainly a little impressed by the tricks and stunts from the kids on their bikes, boards and scooters.  Double-back sommies and the like.  Pretty damn cool!

So moving in to Term Two we have a lot on the agenda already. Round Four of the iKiTrainer Workshops is about to begin. We're excited to be heading to Brewarrina for our first workshop this Saturday, April 30 and then we're off to empower the city folk in Parramatta on May 23.  Then we are back in Dubbo for an iKiTrainer Workshop with Mission Australia on May 26. Register here if you're interested in attending yourself, or sending a team along to any of these workshops.

The iKiFit website is still amidst a bit of an overhaul, and we are still welcoming tips and feedback on what you want to see on the site.  Click here to add your comments.  In the next couple of weeks you'll see some functional changes to the home page that will make it easy for you to guide yourself throughout the site, and we think it'll look pretty sweet too!
July 1 will see the website with brand new member only areas.  Contact us now to find out how you can become a member for free, and access exclusive tools and resources to empower your life.  We will have new blogs, competitions, videos, awesome specials and heaps more content that you won't see anywhere else!

Over to the top right of this newsletter are some links to new videos on the site.  The new Power People video takes you to our Power People video player.  In the bottom right hand corner of the player there is a list button, and if you click on this you will be able to find your school.  We have new stuff from Wellington and Baradine!  Emma's Song and the new Energiser Classes takes you to our Learn Online video player.  In the top right corner there is an arrow pointing down.  Click on this and it will bring up a list with all of our moves and classes.  Scroll down to find what you're looking for.  Have fun with it!

Until next month, stay Happy, Healthy and Strong and be sure to keep checking the website for changes and the calendar for a workshop coming near you soon!

Teaching Our Kids
Remember the old saying, "do as I say, not as I do"? I've determined that just doesn't work with kids. Well I guess if you take into the account their new found love of swearing, then it actually does work. It's hard to scold your child for their slip of the tongue when five minutes earlier the same word fell out of your mouth.  I tentatively put my hand up in admittance to this crime.  Explaining that adults sometimes use "naughty words" doesn't quite cut it with a five year old. Read more

What a whirlwind February and the first half of March have been!  We have visited Dubbo, Wellington, Coonabarabran, Baradine and Walgett, and are humbled by the students who are engaged by iKiFit.

The schools that incorporate iKiFit into their curriculum have seen
spectacular results with their behaviour management.  Wellington Public School has seen a 50% decline in poor behaviour in the last year.  This is amazing and a credit to the students and teachers of Wellington Public, who have embraced iKiFit full heartedly.  Please
contact us if you would like to see how iKiFit can help your school.

Last month we left you with news Mitch would be in Dubbo filming the new Learn Online Content for Green Level.  Pete and Mitch worked on perfecting their techniques to ensure we could bring you first class training footage.  The boys endured a few long days at St John's Primary filming and fine tuning, and the new content is now up
online and will be out on DVD by the end of the month.  Thanks to St John's for the use of your hall, and an awesome effort put in by both Mitch and Pete!

Right now we are planning our new look website.  We're mapping out new functionality and hope that it will be ready to go live before the month is out.  If you've got any tips, suggestions or ideas, please feel free to leave your feedback at
iKiInsight.  We look forward to hearing your views.

So until next month, stay Happy, Healthy and Strong and be sure to keep checking the website for changes.

February 2011 Newsletter

Monday, February 07, 2011
 Date: 07 February 2011

Well February is here, and what a year Australians have had already.  Flooding of massive proportions, cyclone Yasi wreaking devastation in North East Queensland, bushfires in Western Australian and even here in Dubbo, and further out west, we've seen business' submerged and crops go under due to flooding.  Temperatures have soared into the 40s, and basically, Mother Nature has shown us the full force of her fury.

But with all this calamity, one thing remains clear. We as Australians have proven our unity, our strength, and our resilience in times of hardship.  No matter where we live, we have stood together as a community.  We draw courage from the compassion displayed by our fellow countrymen, and I know that I'm not alone in never feeling more proud to be a part of this community that is Australia.

WELCOME TO 2011!!

We are all well into the swing of the new year now, and if you are like the team at iKiFit, you will be feeling very excited by the prospect of the what the year holds.

iKiFit promotes capacity building and bringing positive change into schools and communities.  Essential to our own capacity building, we are thrilled to have received endorsement by NSW Institute of Teachers.  This is integral to our overall strategy of distributing iKiFit into more schools and engaging isolated communities.

The year ahead is looking bright and promising, with iKiFit set to achieve milestones a long time in the coming.  Last year we began the iKiCrew process with Housing NSW, and as a result we have employed Anthony Stanley as a trainee.  Anthony will be leading many of our classes along side Pete, and we are all very excited by his ability and commitment to iKiFit. (read more about iKiCrew)

Mitch will be in Dubbo next week to film footage for Green Level.  This Learn Online content will be available soon, but in the mean time check out Yellow Level, and bring yourself up to date with the basics of iKiFit, so you are ready to be engaged, equipped and empowered by Green!

We trust you all will enjoy the final month of summer. Stay abreast of the latest iKiFit news through our brand new blog, iKiInsight.

Have fun and stay Happy, Healthy and Strong!
